Project Risk and Cost Management Essay

Official SUMMARY: Sleepmore bedding is one of the main makers of beddings and has as of late obtained its rival. This obtaining has gotten a one of a kind suggestion wherein the organization needs to choose if it needs to combine the current plants with the gained plants or let them both run independently. This represents a one of a kind managerial test to the leader of the organization. The president realized that computing the dollar investment funds because of the combination of the offices will be simple however considering the subjective factors before settling on the choice will be troublesome. Thus, The President of the organization asked W. Carl Lerhos, his main partner to concoct an arrangement to improve the choice of picking between uniting the offices or running them independent. Carl picked three central point in assessing the union arrangement. They were augment fabricating advantage, boost deals profit and expand direct money related advantage. These three goals were to be assessed against 13 measures, which Carl showed up upon in the wake of talking about with the administration. These 13 properties were alloted an incentive from 0 to 10 against each plant being considered for solidification. Through these estimations quantitative terms, for example, Annual reserve funds, Plant area, Space accessibility and Initial Cost were evaluated. However, for doling out loads to the staying subjective terms, Carl needed to depend upon his gathering with President, Vice President of Operations and Vice President of Human Resources. In light of their sources of info Carl showed up at the beneath loads. In light of President’s input Annual Savings will be double the weight given to Plant Size. Work is double the weightage of the normal of all the thirteen characteristics. Quality and Service will be gauged more than the normal of allâ the thirteen properties. The executives will be weighed as the normal of all the thirteen properties. Plant area and Plant Size will be given equivalent weightage. Product offering multifaceted nature is 66% the significance of Management ability. Steadiness, Training and design independently has exceptionally little impact however by and large were viewed as double the weightage of Product line multifaceted nature. In view of the above subtleties accessible, Lerhos needs to successfully consolidate and show up at the choice. AHP was created for both the subjective and the quantitative estimations. In view of quantitative and subjective estimations it was obvious that combining the area 1a with area 1b will end up being a decent choice as opposed to consolidating area 2a with 2b or area 3a with 3b. Proclamation OF PROBLEM Mergers consistently includes settling on convoluted choices. Choices that ought to be in light of a legitimate concern for both the organizations which were consolidated. While settling on these choice they need to consider both the subjective and the quantitative and gauge them as indicated by the seriousness of the choice. The following are a portion of the issues which should be handled by Lerhos so as to show up at a choice. 1. Quantitative estimations. Both the organization president and the VPs realized that settling on choices dependent on the quantitative terms was simpler. After conversation with the administration, the estimation parameters so as to consider union of the plants were Annual Savings, Initial cost engaged with the solidification, Plant size and Space accessibility. All the three plants being considered for combination were to be determined for these qualities utilizing Analytical Hierarchical Process so as to show up at a choice whether to proceed with the union. So also, a standard estimation of five was given to the choice of keeping the plants isolated. AHC is to be determined in any event, for this choice. After the individual computations, choice to whether to keep these plants discrete or to proceed with merger were to be made. 2. Subjective estimations. Both the organization president and the VPs realized that settling on choices dependent on the subjective terms was a lot of troublesome. After conversation with theâ management, the estimation parameters so as to consider union of the plants were Labor, Quality, Service, Management Talent, Plant Location, Product line multifaceted nature, Production strength, preparing and Plant design. As referenced in the official rundown the individual loads for the subjective terms were appointed according to the data sources given by VP of Operations and Human Resources. All the three plants being considered for solidification were to be determined for these qualities utilizing Analytical Hierarchical Process so as to show up at a choice whether to proceed with the union. Essentially, a standard estimation of five was given to these estimations for the choice of keeping the plants isolated. AHC is to be determined in any event, for this choice. After the individual figurings, choice to whether to keep these plants isolated or to proceed with merger were to be made. Settling on a successful choice by mulling over, both the subjective and the quantitative terms and the individual loads appointed to these estimations is to be sure a troublesome choice. There is consistently the threat of allotting loads without thinking about how delicate they may be and how they may influence the general choice. Foundation: After each colleague read the contextual investigation we had an underlying conversation on our way to deal with the undertaking. We reached the resolution that we should ascertain AHP independently for both the Qualitative estimations and Quantitative estimations. Explanatory Hierarchical Process will help us in doling out loads to singular estimations and furthermore to check how they charge with every one of the plants. This counts lead to us to come to the end result that for the quantitative estimation, Location 1 will be most appropriate for merger and according to subjective estimation area 2 will be the most appropriate one for solidification. AHP estimations were detailed and we needed to make two distinct networks. One a 4*4 grid for Qualitative estimations and a 9*9 framework for subjective estimations. Additionally a 3*4 grid for singular plants for quantitative estimations and a 3*9 frameworks for subjective estimations were made. Philosophy:- To show up at the arrangement we will classify the accompanying segments into two classifications: 1. Quantitative Analysis :- Here, we will be taking the accompanying four parameters (Annual Savings, Initial cost, plant size and Space accessibility) as for union of the plants. All the three plants being considered for combination were to be determined for these qualities utilizing Analytical Hierarchical Process so as to show up at a choice whether to proceed with the solidification. AHC is to be determined for all the choices. In the wake of playing out the individual computations, choice to whether to keep these plants independent or to proceed with merger will be made. 2. Subjective Analysis:- Here, we will be taking the accompanying parameters (Labor, Quality, Service, Management Talent, Plant Location, Product line intricacy, Production dependability, preparing and Plant design) as for combination of the plants. As referenced in the official outline the individual loads for the subjective terms were allocated according to the sources of info given by VP of Operations and Human Resources. Along these lines, we will consider all the three plants for solidification to figure the qualities utilizing AHP so as to show up at a choice.

The Use of Technology in Cities-Free-Samples-Myassignmenthelp.com

Question: "What are the Sustainability Potential and Planning Implications of technology and/or other Disruptive forms of Smart Practice in Cities?" Answer: Introduction A smart city can be defined as an urban area which implements multiple types of electronic data collection sensors for sending the information to assets and resources which can be utilised in managing them efficiently. The data is collected from numerous sources such as devices, citizens, and assets. After that such information is analysed and processed to control and monitor various systems in the city such as transport, water supply networks, power plants, law enforcement, schools, waste management, hospitals, libraries, and other community services. The smart city concept uses various physical devices along with information and communication technology to connect a network throughout the city to efficiently optimise the operations and services and also connect citizens to them. The government initiates various programs to shape the change in diverse urban areas and formulate sustainable planning policies to concentrate on strategic issues. To establish and maintain a smart city, the government develops various concepts and issues relating to mobility, non-humans, dwelling, sharing economy and technology. These concepts are used in finding new sustainable practices which can be established in a smart city. This essay will focus on providing the sustainable potential and design implication of technology and many other disruptive methods of smart practices in cities. Further, the essay will discuss the convergence of technology and different economics to create a number of new procedures of mobility and urban living. Sustainable Potential and Planning Implication of Technology and Other Disruptive Forms of Smart Practices in Cities The importance and advancement of information and communication technologies (ICT) in previous few decades has assisted in creating the concept of the smart city. According to Hollands (2008), the definition of smart city describes it as the ability of a city to respond as promptly as possible to the necessity of citizens. The core systems of a city profoundly influence the quality of life of people; the core systems include education, transport, public health safety and the government facilities. These factors are necessary to be analysed while formulating the policies of a smart city. As per the research of World Health Organisation, the urban population of the world is accountable for 54 percent in 2014, which has been increased from 34 percent in 1960 (WHO, 2017). As per the prediction of United Nations, by 2017 a large number of populations in less developed countries will live in urban cities, and the worlds population could contribute another 2.5 billion individuals by 2050 t o the urban society (UN, 2014). Cocchia (2014) provided that the growth in population and advancement in information and communication technology has provided the various concept of the smart city to improve the quality of life in urban cities. In the smart city, the government adds physical sensors and other technology to a single network in the core areas of a city to collect the necessary information that can assist in providing better services to the peoples. Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is used in enhancing the performance, quality and interactivity of the services available in urban cities and it also reduces the expenses and consumption to increase the contact between government and peoples. The smart city provides real-life responses to the peoples which improve simple transaction of citizens with the city and its practices. As per Nam and Pardo (2011), a combination of social requirements, economic growth, and human aspiration is implemented to create a smart city culture that formulates the projects and programs for smart cities in many countries. There are various attributes which describe an urban city as smart, such as ICT, efficient public services, safety security, sufficient social capital, transit planning, and many others. The information and communication technology assist in enabling smart public services. The integration and convergence of multiple technologies that are easily accessible over various platforms and devices play a pivotal role in providing transparency, speed, access, and participation in public services. The ICT devices collect the data of users and automatically perform the public services activities which save both time and money of the citizens. Chourabi et al. (2012) stated that using of smart meters, energy conservation, effluent recycling, renewable energy, water harvesting and appropriated solid waste disposal system are few of the hallmarks of a smart city which can be defined as efficient public services. Another critical characteristic of a smart city concept includes the use of public and private partnership to efficiently deliver facilities and utilities as per the provided service level standards. From the perspective of smart city citizens, safety and security are one of the prime aspects. The use of security gadgets such as video cameras, installation of surveillance, brightly lit areas, identify verification access, and rapid feedback in case of emergency are the primary requirements. The financial sustainability which provides monetary independence to the peoples, such as taxes, ads payments, and many others, is also essential for the people of the smart city. As per Washburn et al. (2009), the transit planning in the smart city include various environmental solutions such as bicycle paths, walk to work and convenient public transport. Other than attributes mentioned above there are few more characteristics of the smart city such as sufficient social capital, citizen participation in government activities, green environments and minimum population criteria. The government is responsible for making provision regarding these services to push the development of smart cities. The smart cities are heavily reliant on the technology; there is multiple real-life technological combinations infrastructure available to build the concept of the smart city. The digital city combines the services of communication, infrastructure, and innovation to connect communities through t he broadband network to meet the internet requirement of citizens, corporations, and government. Few examples include free wife availability in a store, public service officers, railway stations, and many other public places. According to Kyriazis et al. (2013), the smart city also incorporates real and virtual reality in the public service, but filling the gap of physical distance is difficult to manage. The technology is not advance enough to implement entirely virtual public services in smart cities yet. A complex system of technology is establishing in a smart city to combine information with intelligence; the data collected by a human is used in providing automated services and research procedure. Another primary framework of a smart city includes a ubiquitous environment that means people can access any public service through any device. A U-city extension is further applied to the smart city to establish an accessible infrastructure that allows peoples to interconnect easily. As per Maddox (2016), various technologies can be used to transform a city into smart city, but many experts believe that the most crucial area is transportation system. Smart transportation system establishes a harmony between the modern technologies and development of the city. The educational grade of inhabitants in significantly vital since it represents an integral part of future growth, the smart devices will influence the method of receiving, understanding, using and learning by users. The informed citizens will be able to learn and utilise the technical system of the smart city quickly, and they will also assist in the development of the city. Many counties have implemented the concept of the smart city by identifying three distinct levels which provide them multiple opportunities. The first step includes the establishment of physical telecommunication network infrastructure which comprises wireless servers and routers for operating such infrastructure. The second phase consists installation of various applications throughout operations in the city, such as traffic control or monitoring services. The final step is based on connectivity or ubiquitous of distinct technologies with each other. The concept of ubiquitous was provided by South Korea, which defines a new model of a sustainable economy based upon the efficient utilisation of transportation, natural resources, and communication solution. To create a ubiquitous city or U-city, various smart solutions are necessary for multiple problems relating to traffic, water, and healthcare. According to Gil-Castineira et al. (2011), many countries have started to implement the concept of U-city such as Oulu city in Finland. Every information system of the city is linked, and all the systems are connected to one information structure by the installation of various technologies such as wireless networks, automation systems, and many others. There are several other examples of real-life smart cities such as Singapore, Barcelona, London, San Francisco, and Oslo. These cities use various ICT, monitoring and Wi-Fi technology in enhancing the efficiency of their public services. For example, in Singapore, multiple sensors are installed throughout the city which catches people smoking or littering in the public areas. As per Caragliu, Del Bo and Nijkamp (2013), Singapore is also working on virtual reality technology by enabling city planners to run virtual tests to create Virtual Singapore. According to Bakici, Almirall and Wareham (2013), in Barcelona, the sensors monitors and operates air quality, noise, smart parking, and smart streetlights, the city is also expanding its free Wi-Fi networks in public spaces. London is making available data from their smart city initiative via its London Datastore; also they have installed smart parking in the Westminster neighborhood area. San Francisco is the hub for modern start-ups, and the city also provides various services to ensure that they receive all the necessary resources, such as efficient public transportation, free Wi-Fi networks, smart parking and many others. Oslo has installed information technology to curb greenhouse gas emission and consumption; the city has planned to change 50 percent of its transport system and 95 percent neutral climate by 2020 (Roche et al., 2012). While building a smart city is an interesting and exciting concept, there are a significant number of problems faced by city planners while formulating the plan for a smart city. According to Zeine (2017), one of the primary challenges of a smart city is sensory overload; these cities are based on data which is collected through multiple sensors installed throughout the city. The street lights, building, and roads are connected with each other to measure temperature, air quality, traffic, infrastructure integrity and many others. All these sensors require a large number of batteries to work correctly, and the US alone buys 3 billion batteries a year but to implement smart city concept they will need around 1 trillion batteries. The first problem of smart city is powering the billions of sensors. The smart cities also have lack of efficient administration and security guidelines are a major threat to this concept. As per Vanolo (2014), the smart city concept requires transparency in the allocation and use of resources which is challenging managing in cities with large population since it increases the chances of misuse. The construction and installation of smart devices throughout the city are way more expensive than general construction. The cost of rehabilitation, infrastructure, maintenance, and repair is significantly high in smart cities. The overall cost of living in smart city is also expensive which causes discrimination with the poor section of society. The digital divide is also an age gap and gendered divide since most of the old peoples and women in developing countries are not able to use technologies due to social and economic inequalities. There are several other issues such as financial requirements, cyber-attacks, culture issues, human resource managing, municipality implementation and many others. The government can introduce various programs and initiative to address the challenges of smart cities. The effective implementation of smart city concept requires contribution and participation of the public. Dameri (2013) provided that the smart cities should encourage the citizens to engage in the operational activities of cites and also provide their genuine feedback. The problem of the digital gap can be removed by achieving equality for women in cities. The government should introduce strict regulations for the establishing gender equality policies and also establish training programs for the old peoples. The problem of security can be reduced by developing strict cybersecurity protocols such as firewalls systems in sensors, encryption of data while transferring, Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) and many others. The problem of power is difficult to overcome due to lack of resources, but modernisation of technology is the only way to overcome this challenge. The government shou ld invest heavily in research to find the solution for efficient power usage. The case mentioned above studies show that the information and communication technology is one of the primary requirements of building a smart city. According to Haidine et al. (2016), the ICT allow different functions of cites to connect with each other an overall improve their efficiency and working. The services such as transportation, weather, lights, data hubs, and many other can be allowed to connect with each other and send and receive the data as well. These smart devices change and update their information as per the change in environment or usage. For example, the sensors available on streetlights in San Francisco, Barcelona and London perform various actions such as monitoring the foot traffic, automatically switching lights on off and smart parking. Jin et al. (2014) stated that the data through the street lights are sent to a parking monitoring hub which provides the information of free parking spot the drivers. The concept of smart parking is achieved by the convergenc e of ICT, monitoring and sensor technology. As per Su, Li, and Fu (2011), the real-life models for smart cities show the importance of smart transportation in transforming a smart city concept into reality. The ICT also assist government into proving smart transportation system. In cities such as Oslo, Singapore, and San Francisco, the public transportation system is connected through ICT system which allows it to share different information with each other. Such information is easily available to the citizens through mobile application or data hubs available throughout the city. As per Lombardi et al. (2012), the ICT allow sustainability potential which can assist in proper allocation and protection of resources, the implementation of technology in cities help in the protection of environmental resources. For example, digitalisation of services and government functions reduce the usage of paper which saves trees, and use of biodegradable products reduces the ecological wastage. The use of green and efficient transportation sy stem lessen the carbon footprint of the cities which improve the quality of air and water Conclusion In conclusion, an urban area which implements technology to improve the working and efficiently of public services is called the smart city. In smart cities, the government applies technology in various facilities such as transportation, municipality, hospitals, schools and other public services. The government faces multiple challenges while transforming a city into smart city such as lack of admiration, the requirement of power, high cost, literacy gap and many others. The government can use modern technology such as information system network, effective communication channels, public literacy programs and many others to address the problems of the smart city. Few examples of smart cities include London, Singapore, Oslo, and others. The government can utilise ICT technology efficiently transform public services into smart facilities. The use of technology in cities protects the natural resources and improves the quality of the environment References Bak?c?, T., Almirall, E. and Wareham, J., 2013. Written by Scripps for the School Magazine free essay sample

Newspaper Article- Written by Scripps for the school magazine. Outstanding! Our Oxbridge Boys Elevate The School! So how can you do the same? So it’s final! Congratulations! The boys of Cutlers’ Grammar school have finally made their headmaster the happiest man in Sheffield after eight of Cutlers’ most influential students make the grade and earn themselves a place at Oxbridge. They are the first of their kind in the history of the school and are they proud? The answer lies firmly with the pleased-as-punch headmaster. For now, the school sits securely at the top of the league tables, right where it was intended to be. An outstanding performance all round has seen an 100% success rate of all of Mr Hector, Mr Irwin’s and Mrs Lintott’s students furthering their education and getting themselves into University. Even the unlikeliest of boys made the grade. So how did they achieve such a difficult challenge set to them by the school? Was luck on their side? Maybe the pressure from both teachers and other students is to blame. We will write a custom essay sample on Written by Scripps for the School Magazine or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page How about the boy’s intelligence itself? Or maybe even God. Whatever the answer is, it’s clear that the boy’s entry into Oxbridge for the first time in all of Cutlers’ history should not just be a one off. Education itself is like a religion. You only get out what you put in. It’s fair to say that some take it seriously, while others don’t. The pressure to succeed is enough to make you rebel and the influences along the way are bound to affect the choices and decisions you take along the way. The teachers themselves are committed to the students, desperately trying to make their education worthwhile†¦. or are they? The teachers of the school play a vital part in the development and contribution an individual student makes to the school. Mr Hector, the boy’s English teacher has a very controversial attitude towards teaching. It is very much a cultural learning experience. Deemed inappropriate by some, it is clear that whatever Hector equips these boys with, certainly works. Mr Hector is adamant on teaching the boy’s life skills, which they can take with them beyond university. He acts as more of a tour guide, if you will, into the unknown world that exists beyond education. Certainly being able to quote poetry and speak fluent French is something to be proud of, but will this help you get into university? It makes us ask the question: What is better for the boys: thoughtfulness or intelligence? Hector isn’t against the intelligence the boys possess, just that is be used in an appropriate way and not so structured. Learn from the wise Mr Hector a life beyond grades and the syllabus. In contrast to this, we introduce the ever modern Mr Irwin. Now the youngest teacher of the school, Irwin was bought in to coach the students for the entrance exams and encourages them to see a different angle to education. Making the boys think outside the box is the key here, but with the upmost of tactics. Liberal in his interpretations, Irwin encourages the boys to look at their work in a provocative way. Not overly encouraging or tactile as a teacher himself, Irwin’s confusing and sometimes frustrating methods really encourage the boys to think. Having been through the same process as the boys barely years before sees him as the most likely to sympathise with the boys. Differing greatly to Hector, Irwin has a set purpose and structure about him. Whilst both startling and thought provoking teaching methods links the teachers; they couldn’t be more different if they tried. It is important the gain knowledge from Irwin and life lessons from Hector in order to be successful into Oxbridge and indeed into life. So where do they get the cold hard facts from? How do the boys actually learn the subject in hand, without being controversial? The answer lies in Mrs Lintott, the most competent teacher; the boys A-Level History grades reflect this. Always to the point, her lessons do exactly what is asked of them. Immensely structured and ridged, the boys learn nothing but what is asked of them. No need to be elaborate or thought provoking, Mrs Lintott teaches the boys what they need and sees no reason to be otherwise. In contrast to both Irwin and Hector, Mrs Lintott holds her own and needs no bells or whistles to do so, the real foundation of learning. As the new students start the new term with a team of varied teaching styles behind them, what could go wrong? There is something for everyone at Cutlers school for boys. However, when all is said and done, the new boys cannot rely on the teachers to mould them into the people they become, nor can they give them the desire to achieve. The new boys must possess a desire to do well, whatever the teachers say or do. There are a certain number of recommendations for a boy to enter Oxbridge: by being intelligent, impressionable, religious, musically gifted or sporty. It’s best to try and be at least three of those things in order to glean whether or not you are an Oxbridge candidate. Whatever your religion, or aspiration is, focus on what you believe in and it will all become suitable in the end. Always have a goal, a point in which you want to reach. Decide what is important to you and build on that. Success is just a word, until you make it a reality. Individually, the boys least likely to fail are the ones who absorb all that is given to them. Is there any chance the new boys could achieve the same amount of success?

How Foreign Direct Investment Affects the Economy

How Foreign Direct Investment Affects the Economy According to the International Monetary Fund, foreign direct investment, commonly known as FDI, ... refers to an investment made to acquire lasting or long-term interest in enterprises operating outside of the economy of the investor. The investment is direct because the investor, which could be a foreign person, company or group of entities, is seeking to control, manage, or have significant influence over the foreign enterprise. Why Is FDI Important? FDI is a major source of external finance which means that countries with limited amounts of capital can receive finance beyond national borders from wealthier countries. Exports and FDI have been the two key ingredients in Chinas rapid economic growth. According to the World Bank, FDI and small business growth are the two critical elements in developing the private sector in lower-income economies and reducing poverty. The US and FDI Because the US is the worlds largest economy, it is a target for foreign investment AND a large investor. Americas companies invest in companies and projects all over the world. Even though the US economy has been in recession, the US is still a relatively safe haven for investment. Enterprises from other countries invested $260.4 billion dollars in the US in 2008 according to the Department of Commerce. However, the US is not immune to global economic trends, FDI for the first quarter of 2009 was 42% lower than the same period in 2008. US Policy and FDI The US tends to be open to foreign investment from other countries. In the 1970s and 1980s, there were short-lived fears that the Japanese were buying America based on the strength of the Japanese economy and the purchase of American landmarks such as Rockefeller Center in New York City by Japanese companies. At the height of the spike in oil prices in 2007 and 2008, some wondered if Russia and the oil-rich nations of the Middle East would buy America. There are strategic sectors which the US Government does protect from foreign buyers. In 2006, DP World, a company based in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, bought the UK-based firm managing many of the major seaports in the United States. Once the sale went through, a company from an Arab state, albeit a modern state, would be responsible for port security in major American ports. The Bush Administration approved the sale. Senator Charles Schumer of New York led Congress to try to block the transfer because many in Congress felt that port security should not be in the hands of DP World. With a growing controversy, DP World ultimately sold their US port assets to AIGs Global Investment Group. On the other side, the US Government encourages American companies to invest overseas and establish new markets to help create jobs back home in America. US investment is generally welcome because countries seek capital and new jobs. In rare circumstances, a country will reject a foreign investment for fears of economic imperialism or undue influence. Foreign investment becomes a more contentious issue when American jobs are outsourced to international locations. Outsourcing of jobs was an issue in the 2004, 2008, and 2016Â  Presidential Elections.

US monetary policy Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

US monetary policy - Term Paper Example When the Fed wants to â€Å"expand the money supply† (create money), it steps in and buys bonds from these dealers with newly-issued dollars acquired by the Fed for the cost of writing them into an account on a computer screen. The Federal Reserve is overseen by board of governors based in Washington, which is a government body (Solomon 1996). This board of governors comprise of 7 members appointed by the president of the United States of America, each of them has the capacity to serve for 14 years. All this members must pass through senate for confirmation and are eligible for reappointment. The chairman is the head of the board being deputized by the vice chairman. Both the chairman and deputy are appointed by the president and must pass through senate for approval (Solomon 1996). Ben Bernanke is the current chairman; he took over from Alan Greenspan. The most common tool used by the Federal Reserve is the buying and selling of government securities in order to increase or r educe the amount of money in the banking system and this is done through an open market (Timberlake 1993). When they buy securities, they pump money into the banking system and accelerate growth  while sales of securities siphon money from the system. Federal Reserve's aim is to use this technique to  adjust the federal funds rate, that is, the rate at which banks borrow from each other (Timberlake 1993). ... the ones required by the law or rather set by the Federal Reserve board of governors can use the money to bring those changes back to stability (Timberlake 1993). The board of directors of each reserve bank sets the discount rate every 14 days. It's considered the last resort for banks, which usually borrow from each other. The Fed uses the discount rate to check the supply of available funds, which will in effect have impact on inflation and in extension interest rates (Degen 1987). If the available money is abundant, there is more likelihood of inflation occurring. It will become more expensive to borrow from Federal Reserve if interest rate is increased. Short term interest rate will, therefore, be increased by lower supply of money and the opposite is true. Quantitative Easing† (QE) is a kind of operations within markets that assist the Federal Reserve achieve its policy targets (Degen 1987). QE involves open market operations that are not different from the way the Federal Reserve often operates in its quest to attain certain policy objectives. When Federal Reserve changes their target interest rate, it is doing so in order to involve open market operations that alter reserves in the banking system so as to get to its preferred rate.    Open market operations often include moves such as adjusting the existing reserves in the banking system so as to assist reaching a target interest rate.  Many people believe that QE operates to achieve its objectives in ways that are different from standard monetary policy, e.g. influencing demand for loans, the wealth effect and interest rate channels (Wells 2004). Much of the misconception is also due to the untruth that QE helps to fund the US government or is equivalent to â€Å"money printing†.   This is not true. The main

Panama Canal expansion Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words

Panama Canal expansion - Essay Example This research will begin with the statement that most infrastructural mega projects are prone to suffer from cost overruns, delays, poor performance or inability to give customer satisfaction if inadequately managed. Interaction of several factors such as governance of such projects, their financing, human management, and financing can cause complexities which can either promote their success or inhibit it depending on how they are approached. It is, therefore, crucial for project managers to thus critically analyze a mega project before undertaking it. This report takes an in-depth assessment of the expansion of the Panama Canal which is one of the busiest waterways internationally. Panama expansion project is also of key interest given that it plays a critical role in maritime trade and brings together international concerns. The initial construction of Panama Canal went underway in 1880 under the leadership of Ferdinand de Lesseps who built Suez Canal. This was a large scale proje ct undertaken by people who had little prior experience in canal construction. They faced several challenges including minimal workforce, diseases and lack of funding. The geology of the region also posed a challenge to the construction work. A second company, the Compagnie Nouvelle du Canal de Panama, was contracted to complete the construction. After the American government the requested French machinery for construction, work officially began in 1904. Despite the challenges encountered in constructing the canal, Panama Canal was completed a decade later.

Authors of the 70s :: essays research papers

Litature is a major contributory factor in a decade. In the 70s there were several break-out authors who we still read and look up to today. Among them are John Updike, Joyce Carol Oates, Kurt Vonnegut, Toni Morrison, Neil Simon, Sam Sheperd, Agatha Christie, Robert C. Atkins, Christina Crawford, Richard Nixon, Carl Sagan, and Stephen King. Robert C. Atkins is responsible for the Atkins Diet which has taken America by storm. Christina Crawford is responsible for the book Mommie Dearest, which gave an in depth view into the life of Christina Crawford growing up as Joan Crawford’s daughter. Richard Nixon wrote the book Memoirs of Richard Nixon. And Stephen King debuted in 1979 with his first big name book, The Dead Zone. Toni Morrison was born Chloe Anthony Wofford in Lorain, Ohio in 1931. Her six major novels--The Bluest Eye, Song of Solomon, Sula, Tar Baby, Beloved, and Jazz--have collected nearly every major literary prize. Ms. Morrison received the National Book Critics Circle Award in 1977 for Song of Solomon. In 1987, Beloved was awarded the Pulitzer Prize. Her body of work was awarded the Nobel Prize in literature in 1993. Other major awards include: the 1996 National Book Foundation Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters, the Pearl Buck Award (1994), the title of Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters (Paris, 1994), and 1978 Distinguished Writer Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Ms. Morrison was appointed Robert F. Goheen Professor of the Council of the Humanities at Princeton University in the spring of 1989. Objective Synthesis

In â€Å"HARD BODIES† by â€Å"STUART EWEN† and â€Å"THE SPORTS TABOO† by â€Å"MALCOLM GLADWELL† outlines particular sports in addition to the differences between the athletic individuals and the ways in which they experience extracurricular activities. The first article listed begins by introducing a man named Raymond who is hoping to achieve the body figure in which he has always dreamed of having. It goes through his daily workout in detail in which he accomplishes after a long day in his office. To achieve his long wanted goal, he works on parts of his body piece-by-piece, practicing repetition in a room surrounded by full-length mirrors. The author then begins describing various advertisements with pictures of quote-on-quote perfect bodies. Both men and women pose together showing off their tone and completion with a light coating of oil. Men generally expose their upper half, as women tend to expose their arms, shoulders and stomach. The author beli eves that these advertisements undergo more meaning then just the exercise in which they advertise. They are more to attract viewers into wanting what they see and spending the money in order to achieve that particular body figure. After reading this article, my mind brought me to think back to many advertisements that I have viewed on shelves of stores as well as gym membership pictures. These figures we see, as they appear toned and have perfection, are never the raw images of these particular individuals. When an advertisement states that the reader should start a new physical training in order to achieve this goal, it includes a denomination of false advertising. These images of these built individuals claim to have recently started new workout habits when in reality these models have kept in shape all their lives and have worked out daily in order to achieve their body types. Women in the workforce viewing these advertisements wanting to appear as these younger more fit women bel ieve they too, can achieve such a body if they begin a new workout routine. The last article discusses the concerns of mainstream sports, while taking a further look into psychology as well as the social identity of an African American athlete. He explores the subject through various data, experiments and observations and captures conclusions within his text using style and formality. Endearing the racial views of sports in society, author Malcolm Gladwell seems to strive to change the reader’s view on this particular aspect throughout his wording. He wishes to illustrate a cause for race not to stand as a criteria position in American sports, but instead for the athletic ability to form as a leading role in such opinions. In the course of his detailed argument, he proposes ideas of equality and nonjudgmental aspects of athletic stereotypes. These two particular articles differ in many ways, one being the opposite perspectives of the body image. Given in the first article, Stua rt Ewen had a perspective displaying the importance of body image by telling the story of the man named Raymond. In the second article, however, Malcolm Gladwell displays the non-importance. Ewen gives perspectives from the eyes from Raymond, and his lifelong journal of workouts in order to achieving his goal weight and body muscle. Translated through the second article by Malcolm Gladwell, he perceived a perspective of the aspect in difference. His article proclaimed that the race and amount of money individuals had could have a say in sports as well as who belongs to what category for each. He does not believe in the stereotypes in which people create based off race, nor does he believe in the theory of success at sports depending on money. What I find to be important about the differences of these two opinions as well as views on this particular subject is the reasoning for each viewpoint. Perhaps the background of the author as well, contributing as a factor of the standpoint in which their opinion exists.Could the background of the author, Malcolm Gladwell, contribute to his reasoning to the stereotypes of sports players? As well as the perspective from Raymond? The author may also have these strong opinions because of their ethnicity or religion, or opinions of their friends and or family. I, for one, stand from a similar viewpoint as Raymond with the concern of working out and keeping the body as wished. Achieving one’s desire body type can be of life’s most inspiring goals yet. It tells any average person that if they persevere, they can reach their goals. From a similar viewpoint, both authors did have a strong belief relating to the importance of a subject pertaining to sports. One believed that it is important to look the way you want, and to work extra hard to get there, while the other mentioned the unimportance of how society today sees many stereotypes of how certain people are meant to play certain roles in sports. Many similar peop le stand evenly gifted according to each other without reasoning. He fights that there is no other side to the previous statement. Lyons, Gregory T. Body and Culture. How Is Jesus Made A Big Impact On My Life - 1251 Words

Jesus has made a big impact on my life. He is my forever friend. I have accepted him and his salvation in my life. I see my life changing, consistently and constantly evolving in the shape that Jesus wants me to change into. I have had life changing transformations that have had a dramatic affect on me.
